Organisational skills

storage in a child

This information aims to help you  support your child to organise themselves in various situations throughout the day.

Organisation skills are an important part of everyday life. They help your child to plan for the day ahead, prepare for individual tasks, choose the right tools for the task and effectively carry out tasks.

What can be difficult?

Organisation is a complex skill that relies on a child’s memory, problem solving, prioritisation, body awareness, visual processing, the order they do things, and time management.

Top tips for organisation and planning

  • Using visual prompts such as photographs or using lists to highlight what is needed for a specific task.

  • Using environmental prompts such as labelling drawers or cupboards to help recognise where things are.

  • Using a diary, planner, or reminder apps.

  • Creating a consistent routine at home.

Ideas for activities which help with learning organisational skills

  • Using a morning/ bedtime task tick chart.

  • Using a white/ chalk board to record each day’s tasks.

  • Using a daily timing chart to help encourage the child to understand how long each task will take.

  • Using coloured post-it notes or an alarm on a phone to remind them of important tasks.
