At its Public Board meeting on 21 May 2026, the Health Board approved Ewenny Road as the preferred site for development for the future delivery of health and wellbeing services in the Llynfi Valley. The decision supports a significant opportunity for investment to deliver more services for more people locally, with better access to a wider range of services closer to home for people of all ages. Plans for a new community-based site are designed to provide more integrated and accessible care, with better joined-up support across different organisations.

The proposed services for the new Centre have been developed using feedback from local people, alongside work by the health board, to understand the needs of the community.
We are proposing to deliver the following services:
Bringing these services together in one modern facility will enable a greater range of health and wellbeing services to be provided closer to home for people living in the Llynfi Valley. It will improve access to services for residents of all ages and help reduce the need for people to travel outside the area to receive high-quality care and support.
Yes. We are working closely with the team at Bron-y-Garn Surgery, who are an important partner in our plans for the new Health and Wellbeing Centre at Ewenny Road.
The proposal is for Bron-y-Garn Surgery to relocate to the new centre, alongside a range of other health and wellbeing services. Bringing services together in one modern facility would help improve access for patients, support closer working between healthcare teams, and enable more care to be provided closer to home for local people.
No. The potential for additional GP practices to be included within the new Health and Wellbeing Centre was carefully considered and discussed during the project development process. However, this is not part of the forward plan.
There is limited land available within easy access of Maesteg town centre that meets the needs of a Health and Wellbeing Centre. We have worked closely with Bridgend County Borough Council to identify this new site.
We know access is very important to local people and the potential new site has vastly improved public transport options and can be directly accessed (via bus or rail) from all parts of the Llynfi Valley and further down the railway line to Tondu, Sarn and Aberkenfig. This addresses significant challenges patients have in accessing services at the current Maesteg Community Hospital site, which was a key issue identified in our 2023 community engagement events.
There is potentially around £33.9 million available to invest in a health and wellbeing centre in the Llynfi Valley to deliver a wide range of services. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve facilities and deliver more integrated services for local people. To ensure the best use of this investment, the health board considered a range of options before the Public Board agreed a preferred way forward. Details of the decision were published in the Board papers in May 2026.
The long-term future of the Maesteg Community Hospital site is still being considered. Bridgend County Borough Council and Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board are working closely together to develop a sustainable long-term vision for the site that continues to benefit the local community.
This work includes exploring potential future health, care, wellbeing and other community-focused uses. No decisions have been made about the disposal, redevelopment, or future use of the site at this stage.
Any future proposals will be developed jointly with partners and informed by engagement with local people, elected representatives, health board staff, local authority colleagues and other stakeholders before any decisions are considered.
This work is separate from the development of a new Llynfi Valley Health and Wellbeing Centre at Ewenny Road. However, we recognise that the two projects are closely connected and of significant interest to the local community.

You will note that our proposed services do not include the return of community beds provision to Maesteg, which we recognise is an issue that is important for many. The reason is two-fold:
In-community care is often the safest and most effective health service provision for older people and includes rapid discharge and safe alternatives to hospital admission, such as ‘Hospital at Home.’ This essentially takes the hospital to the patient through a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, nurses, a physiotherapist and occupational therapist and other professionals.
Importantly, there are different ways of delivering local community beds for patients when they are required, which meets patients’ needs but outside of a hospital setting, and we review these options regularly.
Yes. While discussions continue about the long-term future of the Maesteg Community Hospital site, we remain committed to maintaining and improving services that local people rely on today.
Recent investment includes the modernisation of the hospital's X-ray Suite, funded by Welsh Government. The service operates four mornings a week.
We have also invested in improved accommodation for staff from Bron-y-Garn Surgery within the hospital building. This was necessary due to ongoing building maintenance issues affecting the surgery's existing accommodation. The new space provides a more suitable and comfortable working environment for staff, helping to support the continued delivery of local GP services.
These investments demonstrate our commitment to supporting local healthcare services while plans for the future of the site continue to be developed in partnership with the community and other stakeholders.
