Speech and Language Therapy Career Event Tickets
0:05 My name is Samira and I’m a speech and language therapist.
0:10 We help people with all kinds of communication and swallowing difficulties and work closely with other professionals,
0:18 in lots of different places, like schools, hospitals, prisons and care homes.
0:24 With the help of Katie and Patrick we are going to talk about what speech and language therapy is and how it can help.
0:35 I was finding it hard at school and I was quite lonely. I didn’t know words that everyone else did,
0:44 and I was worried I was doing something wrong. Mum spoke to the teacher,
0:51 and I started seeing my speech and language therapist.
0:56 He helped me to ask for things in different ways.
1:03 While some speech and language therapists work with children, I work with adults,
1:10 often those with brain injuries like from a stroke or a tumour. If someone has trouble speaking or understanding,
1:18 we might use writing, pictures and gestures to help us communicate together. After the stroke,
1:28 I was mixing up my words and I was also having trouble swallowing.
1:36 My speech and language therapist told me what kinds of food and drink I could have to help me swallow safely and some exercises to help me recover.
1:49 She told my partner Simon too,
1:52 so that he could help with meals and do the exercises with me,
1:59 making it much less scary! Working with someone new, I find out what their personal goals are.
2:08 This could be having a takeaway or being able to ask for things in the shops. We discuss the steps we can take towards them,
2:18 and how we can celebrate any successes we have along the way. I always encourage family and carers to get involved as well.
2:28 My speech and language therapist talked to my mum and sister so that we can work together as a family.
2:38 He didn't rush me and I'd get stickers when I won our games!
2:46 Before, I would be quiet all the time but now, at lunch I like to play with Isabella and Tajo,
2:57 but I think I'm best friends with Alisha. I love my job because I can see the positive impact it has on people.
3:08 Swallowing and communication difficulties can make someone feel isolated.
3:15 Having speech and language therapy can give them the confidence to connect with others and that helps the people around them too.
3:27 Simon loves cooking for me,
3:29 so being able to enjoy our favourite foods again and to say how much I appreciate the effort, well,
3:38 it means the world to both of us.
3:40 If you or someone you care about would like to know more about speech and language therapy visit the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists website at rcslt.org.
