Palliative care is an approach that focuses on a person’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs and to prevent and relieve the physical symptoms (such as pain), decreased function, anxiety and stress that often accompany a serious illness. Palliative care also involves helping patients and family members with planning for future needs, coordinating care and working through sometimes difficult discussions.
Across our Health Board, in all settings, we have additionally trained and experienced staff who deliver specialist palliative care. They work with all the other teams to support patients, their families and their carers.
People may be referred to the service by their GP, district nurse, hospital consultant or specialist nurse.
The Specialist Palliative Care (SPC) services in Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB consist of three teams covering Rhondda/Taf Ely, Merthyr Tydfil/Cynon and Bridgend/West Vale respectively, and operate as North, South and West Cwm Taf Morgannwg services.
Our service is made up of doctors, clinical nurse specialists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, speech and language therapists, complementary and diversional therapists. Some of these posts have been developed with funding from Macmillan Cancer Support.
We often see patients who are still undergoing active treatment for their illness, working alongside the oncologist or heart specialist, for example.
Your Specialist Palliative Care team can signpost you to advice and support in your local area.
