Tirion Freestanding Midwifery-Led Unit (Tirion Birth Centre), Royal Glamorgan Hospital

ward at night

Tirion freestanding, midwifery led unit is staffed and run by midwives (who are experts in supporting women in physiological labour, and birth) who will provide all the care and support you require during labour and birth. Tirion is situated within the Royal Glamorgan Hospital site, but does not have access to labour ward, theatre or epidural facilities on this site. The three double-bedded birthing rooms, including access to two birth pools creates a calm, peaceful home from home environment. Those of you following a midwife-led care pathway would be encouraged to birth in a freestanding midwifery unit such as Tirion birth centre. Women who would not ordinarily be recommended to birth in a midwife-led setting who would like the opportunity to plan birth here will always be supported with information about this environment and an individualised plan of care to suit your needs. Where additional care or support is required which is not available at Tirion, we would organise transfer across to one of the Obstetric Units at Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend (predominantly here), or on occasions Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil.
