Sarcopenia is a muscle disease leading to loss of muscle mass, strength and physical function. It can make you more likely to fall, become less physically able and develop pressure sores. Getting older is the biggest cause of sarcopenia, but having multiple medical conditions, not eating and drinking well and being less active in hospital or the home can also cause it. The great news is that sarcopenia is preventable, treatable and reversible! Following the advice in this leaflet can help to reduce your risk, as well as resistance exercise (moving your body against a weight or resistance like an exercise band) and ensuring a healthy diet that includes plenty of protein-rich foods, such as meat, fish, dairy, eggs, tofu, beans and pulses. Please speak to your healthcare provider if you require further information.
Deconditioning is the decline in physical and mental functioning due to inactivity or prolonged bed rest, leading to reduced muscle strength, endurance, and overall physical capacity. It is commonly experienced after being unwell and can be prevented and reversed with movement and exercise.
