Healthy Futures Maesteg

In our first newsletter to local children and parents, we wanted to take this opportunity to share some positive news regarding the future of health and wellbeing services in the Llynfi Valley.

You may be aware that Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board has been funded by the Welsh Government to consider a range of options looking at how we can best meet the long-term health and wellbeing needs of all residents of the Llynfi Valley.

Following extensive work across Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, and informed by community feedback from our 2023 public events, we know you would like us to deliver the following services in the Llynfi Valley in the future:

  • Urgent Care Centre for minor injuries and illnesses, including x-ray and ultrasound services
  • Expanded primary care services
  • Strengthened Outpatient Department with a wider range of specialties, including minor surgery
  • A Children and Families Hub, which will include a Women’s Health Hub and easier-accessed children’s health services
  • Community Mental Health Services
  • Integrated health and local authority teams delivering adult and children services
  • Community spaces for the provision of health and wellbeing services delivered by the Third Sector, including children’s charities and groups, Mental Health Matters and Citizens Advice, amongst others.

In short, and working closely with Bridgend County Borough Council and other partners, we aim to deliver more children and families health and wellbeing services within the Llynfi Valley.

More detail is provided in our latest Frequently Asked Questions (updated October 2025).

The key question we are now considering is where we can best deliver these services in a way that represents not only best value for public money, but maximises the number and types of services we can deliver.

The possibilities under consideration include:

  • The development of a purpose-built facility on a potential alternative site near Ewenny Road, Maesteg;
  • Options at the existing Maesteg Hospital site; taking into consideration the significant challenges that have been highlighted in terms of cost and feasibility, due to the condition and configuration of the buildings and site.

At this stage, we want to stress that no decision has been taken and we expect to be able to determine how to best proceed around Easter 2026.

Engaging our Communities

Ahead of that decision point, we want to engage with as many people as possible to discuss the future of health and wellbeing in the Llynfi Valley, including discussing the site options open to us.

If you are involved in any local groups that would like to meet with us to discuss these updates, answer questions and hear the views of your local group, please contact us at: CTM.HealthyFuturesMaesteg@wales.nhs.uk.
