Silver GreenED accreditation received by POW, PCH and RGH Emergency Departments

Last week, Princess of Wales, Prince Charles and Royal Glamorgan Hospitals were successful in achieving Silver GreenED status from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine.

Three of only 11 Emergency Departments across the UK with the accolade, POW, PCH and RGH, and their respective green teams, have demonstrated their commitment to environmental sustainability and the delivery of greener healthcare services by implementing all the RCEM’s requirements.

This reflects the dedication and hard work of teams across the sites who have embedded sustainable practices into everyday operations, helping to reduce environmental impact while maintaining high standards of patient care.

GreenED accreditation provides a framework for emergency departments to improve sustainability performance, demonstrating leadership in areas, such as, resource efficiency, waste reduction, carbon reduction and environmental stewardship.

Achieving Silver status is a significant milestone and highlights the Health Board’s ongoing commitment to supporting the NHS Wales decarbonisation agenda and creating a more sustainable future for our communities.

Dr Ian Higginson, President of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine said: “A huge congratulations to colleagues at Prince Charles Hospital, Princess of Wales Hospital and Royal Glamorgan Hospital, who have all been awarded silver accreditation through RCEM’s GreenED programme.

“This summer, some parts of the UK and Ireland we have seen firsthand the impact that man-made climate change can have.

“As Emergency Medicine clinicians, we see how this effects our patients and so it fills me with hope that colleagues across the world are taking matters into their own hands. Tackling climate change is more important now than ever.

“We, as a College, are proud to support clinicians to do their part and this reward reflects the hard work and innovation of the teams, all under Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, who have worked to reduce emissions, and waste, ultimately saving money for their departments and improving patient care.”
