Orthopaedic Surgeon Awarded CBE

A Cwm Taf Morgannwg Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2023 King’s New Year Honours.

Professor Keshav Singhal, who is based at Princess of Wales Hospital, receives this honour for his services to medicine and to the community in Wales.

As well as being a consultant surgeon at CTM, Professor Singhal is the Chair of the COVID-19 Risk Assessment group, established in April 2020 at the start of the Coronavirus outbreak, which led to the development of the COVID-19 Workforce Risk Assessment tool.

The Risk Assessment tool was the first of its kind in the UK and allows people working in different sectors to consider their personal risk factors for COVID-19, check if they are at higher risk of more serious symptoms if they come into contact with the virus and gives advice on how to stay safe.

Professor Singhal is also a Governor of the India Centre and Chair of the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO). Through BAPIO, he helped set up a scheme that has brought large numbers of young Indian clinicians to Wales every year.

Speaking about his place on the list Professor Singhal said: "I am delighted and honoured to find my name on the New Year honours list.

“This recognition is a testament to the tremendous dedication and selfless service with which the NHS staff and frontline workers have served our communities particularly during the pandemic.

“I am proud to have contributed to our NHS with various Innovations, training initiatives and particularly to the pandemic effort; alongside other members of the First Minister's Covid 19 risk assessment tool which kept our frontline staff safe during the pandemic.

“I am also delighted to see that my efforts in fostering community, cohesion and integration have been recognised and I hope that the UK will continue to set an example to the world for interfaith and intercommunity harmony and integration.

“All this work is always a team effort and I express my heartfelt gratitude and admiration to my colleagues and mentors who have helped me on this journey leading up to this honour."

Medical Director at Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB, Dom Hurford said: “We are immensely proud of Professor Singhal and his outstanding contribution not only to our communities within CTM but also to the health of the nation. His innovative practice at Princess of Wales Hospital is ensuring that his patients receive the very best surgical treatment and I know that all of his colleagues will join me in congratulating him on this honour.”
