Nursing Support Worker Award Winner 2023

Well done to Christian Harris and Kirsten Jenkins, who won ‘Nursing Support Worker Award’ at the Royal College of Nursing Awards 2023 held on Friday evening (November 10th).

The RCN Nursing Awards celebrate incredible contributions to outstanding patient care and are open to all UK nurses, midwives, health visitors, nursing students and nursing support workers. Covering a wide range of specialties, including learning disability nursing, child health, cancer nursing, mental health nursing and nursing older people, the awards are the highest accolade for nurses in the UK.

Christian and Kirsten work as Support Workers at Ty Llidiard child and adolescent mental health services inpatient unit based at the Princess of Wales Hospital.  They oversee training in prevention and management of violence and aggression for all staff at the unit and deliver the training to more than 100 colleagues, ensuring it is tailored for supporting children and young people, alongside this they undertake their daily duties as nursing support workers.

The training focuses on de-escalation and managing potentially challenging behaviour and gives staff the knowledge and experience to deal with such situations with a reduced reliance on restrictions.

On winning the award, they said: “It is very humbling to be recognised in this way. We are really pleased to have the opportunity to discuss the work we do and share the ideas we have so that maybe other areas can learn from our experience.”

Head of nursing Lloyd Griffiths who nominated Christian and Kirsten said:  “We are delighted that Christian and Kirsten have been recognised with this award. Ty Llidiard has been on an improvement journey over the last few years and their work on Reducing Restrictive Practices and their dedication to maintaining training standards and compliance has been an integral part of this.  They are passionate, dedicated, excellent role models, who play an active part in post-incident staff support and debrief.”
