New dedicated breast theatre opens

A new theatre and recovery area, which will be used almost exclusively for the treatment of breast cancer patients has opened at Royal Glamorgan Hospital this week.

The new theatre aligns with the work of the new Snowdrop Breast Care Centre, a £2m ‘one-stop clinic’ for patients referred from their GP.

Opened last year, the Snowdrop Breast Centre provides care and support for patients with breast cancer not just through diagnosis and treatment, but also enables all of their follow up appointments to take place in the same dedicated setting, this includes breast mammography, ultrasounds and biopsies.

Having all the services in one specialist unit, and now with the theatre located at Royal Glamorgan Hospital, enables the breast care team to easier plan treatment for patients including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, medication, prosthetic advice and fitting as well as counselling and complementary therapies.

Consultant Breast Surgeon Zoe Barber said: “I’m incredibly proud of the team’s hard work with this amazing achievement and took great pleasure in performing the theatre’s first operation there earlier this week. This facility, will enable us to further improve the breast care services we are able to offer.”
