Innovation Award Winners

The Trauma and Orthopaedic department at the Princess of Wales Hospital at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board has won a MediWales Innovation Award 2022 in the ‘NHS Wales Working with Industry Award’ category.

The award was won for ‘Mymobility’, which is a Healthcare Digital Application, that patients can download on their smart phones (after registration by the hospital) and which empowers patients in their management around major operations such as hip and knee replacements.

The MyMobility application is used to support patients by providing customisable prehabilitation and post-surgery rehabilitation, in the form of videos and instructional guides, to ensure that patients are medically optimised throughout their joint replacement journey. Mymobility also offers a two way communication channel between the patient and a multi-disciplinary clinical team to ensure appropriate and timely advice.

Mr Rahul Kotwal, Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon, who led the project said: “Patient feedback about the app has been fantastic and very positive. We have patients, even some in their 80s, who are using the app and absolutely loving it. The app has also reduced patient footfall in to the hospital and telephone calls to the department, as most non-urgent queries are easily dealt with through the communication feature on the app. The hospital team is working with the industry partner to make ongoing changes to the app to make it relevant to the changing practices in the NHS and to make it available to a wider patient population, including shoulder replacement patients.”
