GP surgeries merge to offer greater patient access and secure future of services

Two GP surgeries in the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board area are merging to enable their teams to provide a range of enhanced primary care services and ensure their long-term sustainability.

St David’s Street Surgery in Ton Pentre, and Llwynypia Surgery, Llwynypia, will become one practice from 1 April 2022.

All patients have been sent letters to inform them of the news, and to let them know that nothing will change in terms of access to GP services at present. Both sites will remain open and, due to the overlap between catchment areas, patients will have the flexibility to be seen at either location. GPs, nurses and receptionists will also continue to work from both practices.

The merger means that patients will be able to access a larger clinical team with a greater mix of skills. Access will also be improved, and a wider choice of expertise will be provided.

In addition, a broader range of specialist services will be available in-house - such as minor surgery (including joint injections, INR clinics and contraceptive options).

The merger has been prompted by the retirement of Professor Hasmukh Shah as Senior Principal Partner, who is leaving Llwynypia Surgery after 35 years of continuous service. Dr Shah and his colleagues wished to ensure the high standard of service continued for patients, and both practice teams are confident that the merger will help them to do so.
