Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board wins at the NHS Wales Awards 2023

We are delighted today to be celebrating after winning an award at the NHS Wales Awards 2023 in the category of Working Seamlessly across the Public and Third Sector for the Repurposing of Cardboard: A pilot partnership between Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board and ELITE Paper Solutions.

From November 2022 to August 2023 the Royal Glamorgan Hospital together with ELITE Paper Solutions, a social enterprise in Merthyr Tydfil, worked in partnership to carry out a pilot programme, which is hoped will be implemented across the entire Health Board. ELITE Paper Solutions are based in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, and are a local social enterprise supporting 70 disadvantaged and/or disabled staff and volunteers into training and local employment.

The award was presented to the team behind the winning project at a virtual ceremony attended by finalists from across Wales.

Judith Paget Director General for Health and Social Services and the NHS Wales Chief Executive, said: “I want to thank all of our inspirational finalists and offer my heartfelt congratulations to the winners. We value your outstanding improvement work more than ever, at a time where hard decisions are having to be made in order to prioritise patient care. It’s important to take the time to showcase what you have been working so hard on so that we can celebrate your achievements and also learn from each other. I look forward to seeing how your work develops so that we can help to transform health and care even further."

The NHS Wales Awards recognise how innovative ideas for change can make a significant difference to the patients who need care, the organisations who provide care, and the health and care system as a whole. It is an opportunity to showcase hardworking and inspiring teams working together, striving to improve healthcare practices and patient care across Wales.

Linda Prosser, Executive Director of Strategy and Transformation at CTM said: “We are delighted to have won in the NHS Awards 2023 under the category of ‘Working Seamlessly across the Public and Third Sector’ for the repurposing of cardboard. The team involved in this pilot have worked exceptionally hard and dedicated time and effort working with our partners and stakeholders to ensure the pilot was a success.  I am delighted that their hard work has been recognised. Well done to all involved in the pilot.”

Craig Edwards, Environment, Waste and Fleet Senior Manager for the Health Board received the Award on behalf of the pilot team and said: “For me the circular economy isn't just about waste, but more about enabling CTMUHB to work in partnership with social enterprises such as Elite Paper Solutions to help them grow and reach the true potential of so many individuals who Elite support. The Award is a testament to them.”
