Cwm Taf Morgannwg’s Gafin Morgan has become Wales’ first ever Consultant Podiatrist.

Gafin currently provides strategic and clinical leadership on expert practice for the management of foot and ankle care across services in CTMUHB (e.g. MSK Podiatry, Physiotherapy, Orthopaedics, Sports & Exercise Medicine, Radiology). Gafin also holds the role of Clinical Lead of the Clinical Musculoskeletal Assessment and Treatment Service, Foot & Ankle, within CTM. He has clinical expertise in musculoskeletal sonography, specialising in interventional and point of care diagnostics.

Gafin’s specialist skills are of huge benefit to the patients he works with across CTM. He has introduced new technology and measurement tools, which can inform with greater accuracy the staging of tissue healing of tendons and recovery. Providing an educational role as postgraduate ultrasound mentor and examiner, in addition to managing his own clinical caseload, Gafin collaborates with other Allied Healthcare Professionals, Orthopaedic, Sports and Exercise Medicine and Radiology Consultants to deliver multi-disciplinary care.

On the success of his new role, Gafin said: “Being the first podiatrist in Wales to achieve Consultant status is a great honour, particularly to represent my profession, the Health Board and our service users. I have to thank all my colleagues for their support throughout the almost ten years it has taken me to build my portfolio.

“One thing I like most about my role is there is no typical day. I am often balancing the clinical duties of managing acute trauma or chronic conditions with planning research or strategic discussions. It can be challenging to keep up the momentum with research projects and being comfortable waiting for a future outcome. I hope other professions become inspired to follow the Advanced Practice and Consultant pathway and that my role will provide clarity and inspiration to other Allied Healthcare Professionals who wish to pursue this.”

Denise Jenkins Head of Service for Podiatry Orthotic Services at Prince Charles Hospital said: “We take great pleasure in congratulating Gafin on achieving Consultant status. Gafin has worked in his current Extended Scope Practitioner role since 2009, continually pushing the professional boundaries through role development with T&O colleagues, achieving Chartered Scientist accreditation and leading pioneering Research in Podiatry and for the wider MSK agenda.”
