CTM General Practice Nurse wins General Practice Nurse Award at the General Practice Awards

On December 9, one of our CTM General Practice Nurses, Janette Morgan won the prestigious National Practice Nurse Award at the General Practice Awards, in London.

Janette has been working for the NHS for over 18 years within various roles and received this accolade for her outstanding work as a General Practice Nurse at Practice 2 in Keir Hardie Health Park.

Dr Padma Nannapaneni, who nominated Janette, said: “What an amazing achievement for Janette. Absolutely thrilled and excited for her and the entire practice team. We are all so proud of her. Janette is described by her colleagues as ‘being a credit to the nursing profession”.

Having worked as a District Nurse up until 2016, Janette has played a key role in helping our CTM patients with chronic diseases.  Alongside organising clinics and successful audits, she has made a huge difference to patient care and experience.

Janette was nominated for her commitment in reducing the environmental impact of metered dose inhalers by switching to lower carbon alternatives. She started this project even before The Green Inhaler Initiative set out by CTM.

Janette focussed on Ventolin as Ventolin is known to have a high carbon footprint. It accounts for 28kg/C02 per inhaler compared to that of a dry powder which is less than 1kg/C02. In General Practice, Ventolin accounts for 25% of the prescribing carbon footprint, Janette therefore considered it vital that changes were implemented for a greener future.

Janette emphasised that choosing and switching inhalers was a shared decision with the patients at Practice 2, Keir Hardie; a relatively small practice with excellent patient-clinician relationships.

The Results

Janette attained a 60% reduction in the carbon footprint of inhaled therapy and credits the success to regular interaction with patients, continuity of care and good working relationships at the surgery.

Speaking of her award, she said: “I can’t believe I’ve won an award; I have never been nominated for an award before and feel so honoured to have won. It was such an amazing weekend and I’m still smiling. It is the proudest I have felt in all my life. We have a very good-working relationship with our patients, and in our greener inhaler audit, they couldn’t believe the outcomes themselves.  I’m so thrilled that my work has been recognised and I couldn’t be happier.”

Well done Janette - we are all so proud of you at CTM and so grateful for the excellent care you provide every day to our patients.
