A Healthier Future for the Llynfi Valley
People across Maesteg and the wider Llynfi Valley could benefit from more health, wellbeing and community services closer to home through proposed plans for a new Llynfi Valley Health and Wellbeing Centre at Oakwood Drive, near Ewenny Road.
The planned centre, which is subject to Welsh Government approval upon submission of our business cases in 2027, is part of the Healthy Futures Maesteg programme, which aims to improve health and wellbeing across the community, making it easier to access care, and providing modern facilities that meet the needs of local people now and in the future.
It would be one of the biggest investments in local health and wellbeing services for generations.
Why change is needed
People in the Llynfi Valley experience some of the poorest health outcomes in Wales, with higher levels of long-term illness and increasing demand for health and care services.
At the same time, the existing Maesteg Community Hospital is limited in the range of services it can provide because of the age, condition and layout of the building.
A new Health and Wellbeing Centre would help deliver more services locally, provide earlier support to help people stay well, and bring together services that currently operate from different locations.
What services will be available?
We are proposing to deliver the following services:
- Bron-Y-Garn Surgery
- Urgent Care Centre for minor injuries and illnesses, including x-ray
- Outpatient Department with a wider range of specialties
- Community Services, including Wound Care and Lymphoedema
- Ophthalmology and Audiology Services
- Community Mental Health Services
- Integrated health and local authority teams covering adult and children services
- Community spaces for the provision of health and wellbeing services delivered by the Third Sector, including Mental Health Matters and Citizens Advice, amongst others.
Providing more services in one location will make it easier for people to access care, advice and support closer to home.
Improved transport links
Patients will also be able to access the site more easily, with a council developed transport interchange planned immediately next to the proposed Health and Wellbeing Centre that can support multiple bus routes, as well as Ewenny Road Railway Station directly opposite.
More than a healthcare building
The vision for the new Centre goes beyond providing healthcare alone. By bringing NHS services, council teams and community organisations together under one roof, local people would be able to access a wider range of support in one place. Whether someone needs treatment, wellbeing advice, support for their family, or help connecting with community groups and activities, the aim is to make accessing services simpler.
Designed for future generations
The proposed centre at Ewenny Road would be designed to meet internationally recognised BREEAM environmental standards. This means the building would be designed to be highly energy efficient, reduce carbon emissions and support the NHS's commitment to a greener future.
Community Engagement
This is at the heart of the Healthy Futures Maesteg programme.
We will be visiting your communities during October and November and there will be many opportunities for you to ask questions about the Centre and share your views about what matters most to you when it comes to your health and wellbeing.
