PIPYN celebrates new family programme

The Merthyr PIPYN team celebrated the launch of the brand new children and families programme today by climbing Pen Y Fan and accessing the free local services for families at Cyfarthfa Park. They were joined by families, key stakeholders for the programme and their local project ambassador Kerry Morgan, from Active Merthyr.

The team hopes to help as many young children and families in the Merthyr area to access free support around eating healthier on a budget, reducing screen time, improving family routines and sleep patterns, as well as increasing active play and much more.

Merthyr PIPYN will be providing families with opportunities to access free family passes to local play services, as well as free cooking sessions, equipment and recipe books to create budget friendly family meals.

Shelley Powell Public Health Dietetic Professional Manager and programme lead says ‘this is an exciting opportunity for families in the Merthyr area to help us develop a service that best meets their unique family needs and challenges. It has been great to work with so many of our local partners and the families themselves, to coproduce a service that we know families want and need’.

Support from the Merthyr PIPYN team will be available to families who have at least one child between 3- 7 years old and live in the Merthyr area.  They will be offered a package of interactive, fun family sessions tailored to each family’s unique circumstances. Merthyr PIPYN will even come and help you at the supermarket and guide you through a budget friendly healthy food shop.

In addition to the work PIPYN will do directly with families, they are also supporting local primary schools, play, childcare settings and partner organisations, to support our healthy weights agenda, making the healthy choice the easy choice.
