New Health Board Chair Appointed

Today (Tuesday September 21, 2021) the Minister for Health and Social Services, Eluned Morgan, announced that Emrys Elias will take up the position of Chair at Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB for 18 months, from October 01, 2021 when current Chair, Professor Marcus Longley, completes his four year term in post.

Emrys is currently the Vice-Chair of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and has considerable experience in leadership within the NHS. After training as a Mental Health Nurse he has held several senior clinical and managerial roles at an operational, strategic and Board level up until his retirement in 2016 when he was the Director of the NHS Wales Delivery Unit.

Emrys has a particular interest in multiagency working and the outcomes that can be achieved and has undertaken several projects and national and local service reviews in this area of work. He also advised Government and jointly led the national review of the Mental Health Care Programme Approach, the findings of which influenced the implementation of the Mental Health Measure.

Following the announcement, Professor Longley said: “I would like to congratulate Emrys and very much welcome these succession arrangements that allow our organisation to build on the good progress made within CTMUHB in recent years.

“I wish Emrys every success and our Chief Executive, Executive Team and Board are all looking forward to welcoming and working with Emrys when he joins on October 1st.”

Mr Elias said: “I am honoured and very proud to have been appointed Chair of Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about unprecedented challenges to health services across Wales and I’m committed to helping the Health Board to deliver first-class health services for the area.”

Chief Executive Paul Mears said: “We are very ambitious for CTM and there is still much to do to develop our organisation.

“I, along with all members of our Board, look forward to welcoming and working with Emrys when he takes up position with us, building on all the solid foundations that Marcus was so instrumental in establishing.”
