The new branded menus ‘Maeth’ (meaning nutrition in Welsh) have recently been introduced into the Health Board.

The Maeth catering team is based at the Central Production Unit (CPU) in Treorchy and have been working extremely hard to reform patient recipes and menus to ensure that they are nutritionally balanced, ensuring nutritionally vulnerable patients receive the best nutritional care possible.

The new menus exceed the daily energy and protein specifications required in both the National Food Standards and the All Wales Nutrition and Catering Standards for Food and Fluid Provision for Hospital Inpatients. Exceeding the specification for protein and energy is critical for our vulnerable patients, as many of this patient group only consume small amounts of their meal - by increasing both calories and protein, it assures that if a patient only eats a little amount of their meal, they consume sufficient calories and protein to prevent undernutrition.

The provision of good quality food, nutritional care and intervention in hospitalised patients is critical for recovery from surgery, illness and a prolonged hospital stay. Maeth menus exceed the requirements. All produce used is enhanced with natural food stuffs only.

The CPU currently prepares and delivers meals to other health care establishments in Wales and are working on providing meals for all patients groups within the NHS.

Jill Venables, Divisional Director of Facilities said:  “We are delighted that Team Maeth has been shortlisted in the 2024 National Catering Awards, this is a huge accolade for our Health Board. Team Maeth has worked extremely hard to improve the menus for our patients, aiming to meet all our patients’ needs whilst in hospital to aid recovery.  We are very proud of what we have achieved.”
