Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board has been shortlisted for two prestigious national HSJ Awards; one in recognition of its innovative community-led approach to winter vaccination communications, and the other for its PIPYN service which aims to support children (aged 3-10 years) and their families make sustainable healthy choices.
The Health Board's campaign, “It Takes a Village: A Community-Led Approach to Winter Vaccination Communications," has been named a finalist in the NHS Communications Initiative of the Year Award category at the 2026 HSJ Awards. The award recognises communications initiatives that demonstrate creativity, innovation and measurable impact by engaging patients, staff and communities and driving meaningful change across the NHS.
Developed in response to poor flu vaccination uptake across CTM, the campaign was co-produced with more than 20 third sector organisations and community partners, who are members of CTM’s Community Leaders Network.
The campaign featured a bilingual communications toolkit tailored to local communities and was supported by a Community Vaccination Champions programme, empowering community leaders to have informed conversations about vaccination and share trusted information through their networks.
Early results have been encouraging, with flu vaccination uptake increasing across several key priority groups and exceeding the Wales average in a number of categories. The campaign has also strengthened partnerships between the Health Board and community organisations, creating a sustainable model for future health improvement and engagement work.
The second successful shortlist is in the Early Intervention and Prevention for Children, Young People and Families category, recognising the Health Board’s PIPYN team. The team works with young children and families in Merthyr, Cynon, Rhondda and Taff Ely and Bridgend to access free support around building healthy family habits.
PIPYN includes topics such as eating healthier on a budget, meal planning, affordable food, good shopping habits, healthy recipes, screen time, active play and family play.
Winners will be announced at the HSJ Awards ceremony later this year.
