When to visit a pharmacist

Your community pharmacy team is often your first port of call for minor illnesses. They provide a range of services and expert advice and guidance about treating common conditions.   

As well as over-the-counter medication, community pharmacies offer the Common Ailments Service, which offers patients a free NHS consultation and, where necessary, access to medication for 27 different conditions. These conditions include:   

  • Acne   

  • Allergic rhinitis  

  • Athlete’s foot  

  • Back pain (lower, acute)  

  • Chickenpox (in children under 14 years of age)  

  • Cold sore advice   

  • Colic (infantile)  

  • Conjunctivitis (bacterial)  

  • Constipation  

  • Diarrhoea advice   

  • Dry eyes  

  • Dry skin (including dermatitis and atopic eczema)  

  • Indigestion  

  • Haemorrhoids  

  • Head lice  

  • Ingrown toenail advice   

  • Mouth ulcers   

  • Nappy rash  

  • Oral thrush  

  • Ringworm  

  • Scabies  

  • Sore throat  

  • Teething  

  • Threadworms  

  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)  

  • Vaginal thrush  

  • Warts and verrucae
