My Career in Dental Nursing
I qualified as a dental nurse in 2016 following a 2 year programme with Cardiff University. I was lucky enough to secure my placement at the Dental Teaching Unit in Porth in 2014. Over the two years I developed as an individual and gained many skills required to assist dental practitioners in all aspects of dental treatment and patient care, ensuring a smooth and efficient running of the surgery.
On completion of the programme I gained my qualification along with a full time position at the Dental Teaching Unit. Here I work with a big team, providing newly qualified dentists with support and assistance in their Foundation Training year. I have had the pleasure of working with many Foundation Dentists that have passed through this system over the past 11 years.
Why did you chose a career in Dental Nursing?
I have always had an interest in healthcare, particularly in helping people feel better and looking after their well-being. Dental nursing allowed me to do exactly that, while working in an environment that’s both dynamic and rewarding.
The role of a Dental Nurse is more than just ‘passing things to a dentist’. It involves technical skills and it is about ensuring patients feel comfortable and supported in what can often be a stressful situation for some. There is something incredibly rewarding about seeing someone’s confidence grow after a successful treatment and know I played a part in that process.
From working with children, to adults of all ages, preparing for various dental procedures and even providing guidance on oral hygiene, no two days are the same.
What advice would you give to someone looking for a job in Dental Nursing?
If you have a passion for healthcare and a desire to help people and the opportunity to make a difference in patients’ lives, then considering a career in Dental Nursing could be the right career path for you.
What are your next steps or future career aspirations?
There are always ongoing opportunities for professional development and this is something I truly value. I want to develop on a personal and professional level and I am currently striving to do so by working towards, completing the Level 3 qualification in Leadership and Management (ILM) to help support me in my future plans of working in a leadership role.
