Ysbyty Cwm Cynon supporting patients with hairdressing service

Your Voice Matters: Celebrating Patient Experience Week 2025

In January Ysbyty Cwm Cynon introduced an in-house hairdressing service for patients staying on Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7. 

Local hairdresser Ralph Jones began offering pre-booked hairdressing appointments for patients two days a week. The service has proved to be very popular.  

Ralph Jones said: “What a privilege it has been to boost people’s well-being. What amazes me each time is when they see themselves in the mirror after their haircut, something comes alive in them again, very emotional to say the least” 

Anthony Hughes, Deputy Locality Manager, Ysbyty Cwm Cynon said: “Ralph visits the hospital two days a week, providing pre-booked hair appointments. So far, he has been very popular and has booked over 20 appointments with patients throughout February and March 2025. We’d like to send a huge thank you to Ralph for coming in and supporting the hospital and our patients.” 

Jenny Oliver, Head of People’s Experience said: “We would like thank Ralph, Anthony and the entire team at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon for working so hard to bring this service onto the wards. This is an excellent example of CTM staff identifying opportunities and innovative ways to improve and enhance the experience of our patients. A huge congratulations to everyone involved.” 

Any patients wanting a haircut must have capacity to ask for a haircut, or a parent/carer providing consent for the haircut to take place. A member of staff walks each ward every Monday to take booking requests with patients, carers and family members.
