Three international nurses from Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board were among just twenty-five nurses from Wales to accompany the Chief Nursing Officer, Sue Tranka to Buckingham Palace.
The event that was held last week was to celebrate the contributions that nurses make to the nursing and midwifery profession at a Buckingham Palace reception hosted by the King.
Jocelyn Selmois, Valerie Lei Valera-Tayamen and Helsie San Jose were three of hundreds of nurses selected to visit the Palace through nomination.
Jocelyn Selmois, is a ward sister working at Prince Charles Hospital, ward 11.after coming to Wales 22 years ago form the Philippines. The lead nurse for unscheduled care nominated Jocelyn after discussing this with her colleagues, agreeing that Jocelyn is an excellent example to the nursing profession, she shows passion, commitment and care to all her patients and her staff.
Valerie Lei Valera-Tayamen(Lei) is a ward sister working on Ward 11 at the Princess of Wales Hospital. She was the one of the nurses directly hired from the Philippines and initially worked in an endocrine ward before moving to surgery.
Lei said: “Most of my years were dedicated to working within surgery because that is where my passion is. I worked on ward 7 at POW as a senior staff nurse and later as a ward sister for almost five years before moving to ward 11 as a ward manager in July 2019.”
Lei has now worked Princess of Wales for 20 years, 10 months and still counting. The head of nursing at the Princess of Wales nominated Lei due to her passion and commitment to nursing. She said that Lei, "is an excellent ward manager. She has no vacancies on her ward due to her leadership and has built an excellent team. Lei leads her team to provide compassionate care for the women they see on the ward going through a traumatic and emotional time in their lives.”
Helsie San Jose, works in the Coronary Care Unit at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital and is proud mother of three. Her work includes caring for patients with Myocardial Infarction, heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias. Helsie manages the day to day running of the ward and supports the junior members of the team. She came to Wales in 2001 from the Philippines and has worked at Royal Glamorgan Hospital since - almost 22 years. The lead nurse for unscheduled care at Royal Glamorgan Hospital nominated Helsie because she believes that she deserves d to be recognised for her hard work, adaptability and being a great nurse.
