Striking new artwork at Prince Charles Hospital celebrates Organ Donors and Encourages Life-Saving Conversations

Organ Donation Artwork

A powerful new art installation has been unveiled at Prince Charles Hospital to recognise organ donors and their families, and to inspire more people across Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (CTMUHB) to register their organ donation decision.

Funded jointly by Cwm Taf Morgannwg NHS Charity and the South Wales Organ Donation Fund, the daffodil-inspired design, was created and installed by Hospital Art Studio, and is the first donor recognition artwork in the region.

The installation, which will welcome patients, visitors and staff in the main Outpatients Department, symbolises remembrance, hope, and renewal. The artwork’s daffodil design draws on the national flower of Wales to represent the life-changing impact of organ donation.

Installed in early August, the piece combines natural forms and vibrant colour and includes a QR code linking directly to the official NHS Organ Donor Register. It aims to not only to commemorate patients who have donated organs, but also to encourage people living in the CTM region to have conversations with loved ones about organ donation.

Artist Harry van de Bospoort from Hospital Art Studio said: “We’re so proud to have created this piece alongside the organ donation and charity teams. We wanted to craft something that feels alive with meaning and invites quiet reflection. Daffodils bloom after winter and are a symbol of spring, making them a powerful metaphor for the renewal and second chances made possible through organ donation. Our aim was to create a space where visitors, patients and staff can feel inspired by the legacy of those who have given the gift of life.”

Corinna McNeil and Victoria Hughes, Specialist Nurses in Organ Donation at CTM UHB, shared their gratitude. Corinna said: “Harry and his team have done an incredible job, and the artwork is more beautiful than we could have imagined. This installation will be a heartfelt tribute to every Cwm Taf Morgannwg organ donor and their family. It will stand as a lasting message of thanks, compassion, and of the incredible legacy that these donations leave behind.”

Abe Sampson, Head of Cwm Taf Morgannwg NHS Charity, said: “It’s a privilege for our charity to support projects like this, which not only enhance our hospital environments, but also spark meaningful, life-saving conversations. With high footfall in the Outpatients Department and surrounding waiting areas, the artwork offers a unique opportunity to reach patients and families who may never have considered organ donation as part of their end-of-life care planning decisions. It will also serve as a powerful reminder of the positive impact of organ donation, and how it saves lives within our local communities.”
