Step Into Nature: Discover the Llwybr Coedwig Cymru (National Forest for Wales Trail)

Green leaves

As part of Wales Nature Week (4th - 12th July), we're encouraging staff and visitors to discover local opportunities to connect with nature and support their wellbeing through walking and outdoor activity. Wales Nature Week is an annual celebration of the nature that surrounds us, encouraging people to pause, look again and appreciate the wildlife and green spaces that exist in our communities, parks, woodlands and countryside across Wales.

Did you know that part of the Llwybr Coedwig Cymru Trail runs right near Royal Glamorgan Hospital? This exciting initiative is helping connect people with nature, improve wellbeing, and make it easier to explore the outdoors - right on our doorstep.

Join us at our drop-in engagement session

To help staff and visitors learn more, we’re hosting a drop-in engagement session at Royal Glamorgan Hospital on 10 July, where you can find out how to make the most of the trail.

Come along and meet the team from Llais y Goedwig (the community woodland network for Wales) and partners to learn more:

  • Location: Main entrance, Royal Glamorgan Hospital
  • Date: Friday 10th July
  • Time: 10:00am - 2:00pm

What to expect

At the stand, you can:

  • Learn about local trail routes near Royal Glamorgan Hospital
  • Ask questions and discuss any concerns
  • Share your feedback to help shape future activities

The team is keen to hear from staff and visitors about what would make the trail more accessible and appealing.

Who should come along?

Everyone is welcome - including:

  • CTM staff, patients and visitors
  • Anyone interested in improving their wellbeing through walking
  • Those who are new to walking routes or unsure where to begin

Even if you’ve never used a trail before, this is a great opportunity to start.

What is the Llwybr Coedwig Cymru?

The Llwybr Coedwig Cymru is a waymarked route of around 80km, connecting a series of National Forest sites across South Wales. It offers a rich mix of landscapes - from coastal paths and urban green spaces to dense woodland and panoramic countryside views - creating opportunities for everyone to enjoy nature, whether you’re looking for a short walk or a longer adventure.

Built largely on existing public rights of way, the trail is accessible and flexible, making it suitable for families, beginners, regular walkers and those discovering outdoor spaces for the first time.

Breaking down barriers

Spending time outdoors can have a powerful impact on our physical and mental wellbeing. But we know that not everyone feels confident accessing walking routes.

Engagement work has shown that common barriers include:

  • Not knowing where to start
  • Uncertainty around safety or accessibility
  • Perception that trails aren’t “for them”

This work aims to break down those barriers by providing clear information, encouragement and support, helping more people feel confident stepping into nature.

Explore sections of the route near you

The pilot trail includes several connected sections across South Wales, including routes linking:

Each section offers a slightly different experience - from gentle, scenic walks to more adventurous stretches - so you can choose something that fits your time, ability and confidence level.

Building a healthier, more active community

This engagement work is part of a wider ambition to:

  • Encourage more people to enjoy the outdoors
  • Support physical and mental wellbeing
  • Create inclusive opportunities for staff, patients and communities

Future plans include guided walks, tailored resources and partnerships with community groups to help more people take part and feel confident using the trail.
