Staying Well this Easter Bank Holiday

With Easter on the horizon, this bank holiday weekend often marks the start of brighter days to come.

Whether you’ll be celebrating Easter with the family, getting away from it all, or enjoying days out (hopefully with some sunshine!), we want to make sure you have all the information you’ll need to access services appropriately, if you need us this Easter.

Stock-up your first aid kits and medicine cupboards

With the long bank holiday and Easter school holidays, we know that bumps and bruises are common. Most minor illnesses and injuries can be treated at home and do not need medical attention. Keeping a well-stocked first aid kit at home, or in the car, can help you to treat minor injuries on the go.

The same goes for minor illnesses like colds and coughs. Many can be treated with over-the-counter medication like paracetamol, plenty of fluids and rest.

This webpage from St John Ambulance contains all essentials for a well-stocked kit.

Order repeat prescriptions in good time

The bank holiday can mean it may take longer for your local pharmacy to dispense your medication. If you’re due your medication, make sure you order at least seven days before you run out to ensure you have your supply in time.

If you’re able, you can order your medication by using the NHS Wales App.

Pharmacy Opening Times

Over the bank holiday weekend, your GP Practice will be closed, as well as some other Primary Care services in the community.

There are some community pharmacies that will be open and available to assist you. Please visit this webpage to find out more.

Feeling unwell but unsure where to go?

If you or someone you care about is feeling unwell and your GP Practice is closed, contact NHS 111 Wales.

You can visit the NHS 111 Wales website, or call to speak to a trained professional who will be able to advise you on the best course of action to take. This could be to wait until your GP practice is open, visit a different member of the primary care team, attend Out of Hours, or visit a Minor Injuries Unit.

You can also call 111 and press Option 2 if you require urgent mental health support.

Remember, 999 or the Emergency Department, in an Emergency

In an emergency, please visit the Emergency Department at either Prince Charles Hospital, Princess of Wales, or the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

Some examples of a medical emergency include:

  • Unconsciousness
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Suspected heart attack
  • Serious injury or heavy blood loss
  • Sudden weakness or speech problems

Thank you for helping us keep our communities well this Easter. By preparing ahead, choosing the most appropriate service and looking after one another, we can all enjoy a safer and healthier bank holiday.
