Anyone can have a fall, but the older people get, the more likely it becomes, especially if they have mobility problems.
If a person is at risk of falls, certain lifestyle changes can help them avoid injuries and boost confidence and independence.
One of those ways is through Falls Prevention courses; a series of classes that are designed to support people at risk of falls with strength and balance training.
David Lewis, 80, from the Rhondda, referred himself to CTM UHB’s “Don’t Fall For It! Falls Prevention Service”. Occupational Therapists recommended the service to him after his mobility rapidly deteriorated two years ago. David has spina bifida and widespread osteoarthritis and was falling daily, relying on his wife to help him get around.
David’s fear of falling worsened after two serious falls while on holiday. Upon joining the Falls Prevention Course, he set goals to reduce his fear of falling and improve his balance to make everyday tasks easier.
Having attended weekly classes for 10 weeks in Rhondda Fach Leisure Centre in Tylorstown, David has seen a marked improvement in his balance and is now able to pick things up from the floor independently and with ease. He’s also noticed an improvement in his stamina and feels more confident when going out.
Speaking of his experiences, David said: “I 100% recommend the Falls Prevention Course to anyone who is fearful of falling. I have enjoyed every session and seeing the improvements to my life has been so worth doing it. I also made friends in the classes and looked forward to attending every week to see them.”
The Falls Prevention courses also includes an educational discussion at the end of each class. Each week focusing on a different topic relating to falls risk factors and improving your quality of life.
