Safer Sleep Week

This week is Safer Sleep Week, an awareness campaign run by the Lullaby Trust to advise parents and carers of the risks of sudden infant death syndrome and the simple advice that reduces the risk of it occurring.

The theme for this year’s Safer Sleep Week is co-sleeping. We know that the safest place for a baby to sleep is in a clear, flat, separate sleep space. We also know that, for different reasons, so many parents co-sleep with their baby at least some of the time. It’s vital that every new and expectant parent knows the advice on how to co-sleep more safely, regardless of how they plan to sleep.

REMEMBER | Co-sleeping with your baby is very dangerous if:

  • you or anyone in the bed has recently drunk any alcohol
  • you or anyone in the bed smokes
  • you or anyone in the bed has taken any drugs or medication that make you feel sleepy
  • your baby was born prematurely (before 37 weeks of pregnancy) or weighed under 2.5kg or 5½ lbs when they were born.

Never fall asleep on a sofa or armchair with your baby. The risk of SIDS is 50 times higher for babies when they sleep on a sofa or armchair with an adult.

Some of our fantastic CTM midwives have helped us put together this short film, which will help you ensure your baby sleeps in a safe environment, whether in their own cot or crib or sharing a sleep space with you.
