Project Search Graduates: Ethan's Story

Ethan Ethan is a Project Search graduate who lives in Merthyr. He has ADHD, ADD and Dyslexia. This is his internship story:

Ethan attended Cyfartha High School before starting his course and internship with The College, Merthyr and Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

He completed placements with the Pathology and Haematology team(s) at Prince Charles Hospital whilst completing a Vocational Studies course with The College Merthyr.

During his placement, Ethan helped with the general cleaning of the lab, cleaned the centrifuge, made sure fluid levels were topped up, supported with the stores and reorganised the stockroom.

After a short period of time, Ethan was working mostly independently, due to his outstanding work ethic and the trust he gained from the staff.

The teams were delighted with Ethan during his internship, with his mentor Wayne describing Ethan as ‘a breath of fresh air and explaining how he made ‘life a lot easier’ for the department. Another colleague, Kyle commented that he ‘loved having Ethan around’.

Ethan said: “I am much better at managing tasks now. I'm definitely more confident and ready for the world of work. I going to carry on volunteering with Elite when the internship ends and continue looking for employment and/or apprenticeship opportunities. “

Gavin Llewellyn, The College Merthyr said: “We are incredibly proud of Ethan, and how hard he’s worked over the last year. He has sailed through the course. As an intern, he just got on with it, and was the most independent out of this year’s cohort, needing only minimal support from our team, and willing to try anything without any fuss. He has really built on his confidence since being in Pathology, he's also improved his social skills and has become more open to trying new things.”

Rhian Lewis said: “Ethan’s internship and work with the Pathology and Haematology Department is a clear demonstration that young people with additional learning needs can not only make wonderful contributions to both the world of work and wider society, but that these roles can help them to thrive and grow. We would like to wish Ethan and the Pathology/Haematology team a huge congratulations (llongyfarchiadau) on such a successful placement!”
