A new digital system to support safer, more efficient prescribing of medicines is being introduced across our hospitals in Cwm Taf Morgannwg.

Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (ePMA) is replacing traditional paper drug charts with a modern digital system, allowing healthcare professionals to prescribe and administer medicines electronically. The rollout will begin this week at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, before expanding to other acute and community hospital sites across the Health Board.

The introduction of ePMA is part of a wider national programme to improve prescribing practices across Wales. By digitising the process, the system is designed to reduce medication errors, improve access to information for clinical decision-making, and enhance the overall safety and quality of patient care.

Patients may notice staff using mobile devices, laptops, or tablets on wards as part of the new system. While the technology behind prescribing and administering is changing, patients can be reassured that their care and experience will remain the same.

In addition to improving safety, ePMA will help streamline processes, reduce delays in receiving medication, and support more sustainable, paper-free ways of working across NHS Wales.

The system has been developed with input from a multidisciplinary team of pharmacists, nurses, doctors and digital specialists, ensuring it meets the needs of both staff and patients.

Stuart Morris, Director of Digital at Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB said: “The introduction of ePMA is a significant milestone in our digital transformation journey at CTM. By replacing paper charts with a safer, more efficient digital system, we are improving the way our staff deliver care every day. This is a real step forward for patient safety, and I’m incredibly proud of the teams who have worked so hard to make it a reality.”
