Memory keepsake for special care families

When mum Laurie Higgins’ little boy Jacob was born ten weeks early at Prince Charles Hospital, the family spent more than a month in the Special Care Baby unit.

This week, Laurie launched a new initiative on the unit which will see all families receive a set of beads and a journal to record their little one’s journey. Ultra runner Laurie has raised the money for this herself through running challenges.

Laurie said: “The nurses on the unit were incredible during Jacob’s stay. Using the money we raised, I wanted to ensure the unit had something that could benefit and make the experience just that little bit better for parents. I wanted to fund our own ‘Beads of Bravery’ personalised to ‘Little Warrior Journey’, NICU Journals purchased from Etsy, which I loved using and now look back at. Funds left over have been used to buy some basic baby essentials for the Unit.”

From this week, families of all babies born at 32 weeks gestation and below, or babies anticipating long term Neonatal care due to complex needs, will receive a bead and journal pack. Families who chose to take part will be encouraged to note date milestones by adding a significant bead to a band.

Laurie continued: “Every baby requiring neonatal care is a warrior and each of their journey will be different. At the point of discharge, each eligible baby will have an individualised memento of their specific journey. In celebration of their accomplishments.”

Leanne Nash is a nurse on the Unit who has worked with Laurie to bring her ideas to fruition. She said: “Laurie’s idea and the fact that she has been able to make it a reality for the Unit is inspirational. These keepsakes will make a real difference to the families who spend so much time with us. Thank you Laurie!”

Laurie continues to raise funds for the unit and is set to complete a 70 mile ultra-run later this month.
