Mask wearing compulsory on all hospital sites

disposable face mask on a face

This year we are experiencing a more severe strain of flu circulating across our sites and communities than in recent years. To help manage the spread of the virus and save the lives of the most vulnerable, we have extended compulsory mask-wearing for staff, visitors and patients on our hospital sites until 12 January 2026

Since mask-wearing was introduced on 24 November, we have already seen the important role it plays in slowing the spread of infection. Extending this requirement is essential to protect patients, colleagues and our wider communities during this exceptionally challenging flu season.

Fluid repellent masks must be worn by all staff, patients and visitors (unless clinically exempt) when entering our hospital sites, wards, corridors, Emergency Departments and all clinical settings, including our Minor Injury Units (MIUs).

When worn correctly, masks act as a filter that reduces the number of germs you breathe in and out. If worn by someone who has a virus, masks can significantly reduce the chance of spreading it to others.

Masks are provided at building entrances.

We would also like to remind the public, patients and those visiting loved ones in hospital of the importance of preventing the spread of illness.

You can help us by following the steps below:

Get vaccinated

If you’re eligible for vaccinations against flu or COVID don’t miss out. Getting vaccinated is the single most effective thing you can do to prevent yourself becoming ill and suffering the worst effects of these viruses.

Maintain good hand hygiene

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitiser. This may seem like a small thing, but it makes a big difference.

Visit responsibly

You can help us to contain the spread of the virus by only visiting our hospital sites if absolutely necessary.

Respiratory illnesses and viruses can be dangerous for vulnerable patients in hospitals.

If you are immunosuppressed, think you have a virus or have recently spent time with someone who has a virus, avoid visiting our hospitals.

Support with discharge

With flu cases currently high across our hospital sites, we ask for your support. If you have family members who are medically fit for discharge, please help us facilitate their safe return home. This enables us to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
