This month, staff at Prince Charles Hospital welcomed colleagues and guests to join them at a ceremony to dedicate the newly completed theatre suite to the memory of the late Professor Haray, on what would have been his birthday.

Professor Haray, who sadly passed away in 2023, became a consultant at Prince Charles Hospital in 1996. For 27 years the hospital, local population and wider surgical community within CTM, across Wales and beyond benefitted from his passion, innovation and pioneering spirit.

He devoted his life to healthcare, and he was dedicated to his role as Visiting Professor of Coloproctology at University of South Wales and supporting the education of others. His training has supported and benefited many colorectal surgeons across the UK, and the resulting improvement to patient care is just part of his legacy.

In the years since Prof Haray became a consultant at Prince Charles Hospital, the local population, and the wider surgical community of our health board, and Wales, has benefitted so much from his pioneering work and passion for driving forward new ways of working.

The education of others in his profession was an essential part of Prof Haray’s ethos, and he was dedicated to his role of Visiting Professor of Coloproctology at University of South Wales. The wider benefit his training has provided to so many colorectal surgeons across the UK and the resulting improvement to patient care is just part of his legacy.

During his career Prof Haray received countless awards, including the PEN 2010 UK award, demonstrating how improving patient care was always his first priority.

In his time as Deputy Responsible Officer at CTM, Prof Haray established a robust and supportive structure, ensuring all our doctors know what is expected of them, as well as a process to support and encourage compliance. This was one of many senior roles Prof Haray held at our health board; other roles included Director of Cancer services, AMD for Education and CD for Surgical Services.

Dom Hurford, Executive Medical Director at Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB said: “We will never be able to appreciate the full impact Prof Haray had on our health board and further afield, and his legacy will always be with us. Every now and again an exceptional colleague comes forward and Haray was definitely one of them.

“It is a huge testament to Prof Haray that over 120 people attended the naming ceremony, and that over the last two years, so many people have expressed their sadness about his passing. The impact he made was considerable, both within and outside of our organisation.”
