Several hands high fiving one another

Today, Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (CTM UHB) is proud to celebrate National Supported Internship Day 2026, recognising the achievements, potential, and impact of its Project SEARCH supported interns. Their hard work, determination, and commitment continue to inspire colleagues across the organisation.

Project SEARCH provides young people learning difficulties and/or Autism with valuable, hands-on workplace experience, helping them build skills, confidence, and independence as they prepare for future employment. At CTM UHB, interns have been making a meaningful contribution across a range of departments.

Todd Todd is an Admin Assistant Supported Intern in the Ophthalmology department at the Princess of Wales Hospital, shared that the experience has been both rewarding and transformative.

Gaining practical experience in a new environment, Todd has developed key administrative skills, such as using databases and managing medical records. With the support and patience of the team, the internship has helped to shape Todd’s future career goals, build confidence for job applications, and prepare for interviews.

Eliot is also based in the Princess of Wales Hospital and has seen significant personal and professional growth since joining Project SEARCH. Eliot highlighted how the programme has helped him become more sociable and confident, both in the workplace and in the classroom. During his placement in the Pharmacy department, Eliot gained valuable hands-on experience, including conducting independent ward visits and working with a pharmacy robot to store medication. In addition to workplace skills, he has developed important life skills such as independently navigating public transport. Eliot credits the internship with giving him a clearer direction for his future career, with aspirations to work in pharmacy or a related field.

Eliot The success of the programme is reflected in its outcomes, with an impressive 94% of participants progressing into positive destinations. These include employment within CTM UHB, roles outside the organisation, and volunteering opportunities which demonstrates the real and lasting impact of supported internships.

Rhian Lewis, Learning and Development Lead at CTM UHB, expressed her appreciation to everyone involved in making the programme a success: “I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the dedicated tutors at Bridgend College and Merthyr College, as well as the job coaches at Elite Supported Employment, for their ongoing commitment and support.
