Dale Cartwright, one of CTM’s Anaesthetic Specialty Doctor, has been promoted to the grade of ‘Commander’ within the Order of St John -in recognition of his work with St John Ambulance Cymru and South Wales Police.
Having joined CTM over 10 years ago, Dale has worked in a number of specialities and is now an Anaesthetics Specialty Doctor. Dale’s work is divided between main theatres, providing anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgery, and labour ward with duties including providing anaesthesia for elective and emergency caesarean sections, epidurals for pain relief and responding to various obstetric emergencies.
For 23 years, Dale has volunteered with St John Ambulance, joining as a cadet at the age of 13, and now continuing to volunteer as the Crowd Doctor at the Principality Stadium, along with other major events, such as international sporting events, music concerts, Cardiff Half Marathons etc.
Dale is also the County Clinical Manager for Mid Glamorgan, taking responsibility for the Leadership and Clinical Governance of a team of volunteer Healthcare Professionals in the locality.
Alongside volunteering with St John Ambulance, Dale also volunteers for South Wales Police. For over 16 years, Dale has volunteered as a Special Constable, serving in a number of uniformed ranks.
In 2012, Dale was promoted to the rank of Chief Officer of the Special Constabulary. This means that Dale is responsible for the overall leadership and strategic direction of the Special Constabulary.
Dale has been very successful in his volunteering roles and is one of only two special constables in South Wales to train as a PSU Medic, where he has policed many national and international events held in South Wales.
In 2021 he was commissioned as a Deputy Lieutenant for Mid Glamorgan. His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Mid Glamorgan is The King’s personal representative in the County; this role includes planning royal visits and escorting members of the Royal Family during visits to the area; facilitating honours and awards including presenting British Empire awards and the King’s Awards for Voluntary Service and Enterprise.
This is a huge achievement and Dale is delighted to have been recognised in this way. He said: “I was completely surprised to receive such an honour, simply for doing the things I enjoy.
“Volunteering has always featured strongly throughout my life and I can honestly say that I have gained more from these various volunteer roles than I have put into them. I don’t think I would be where I am now in my career if it wasn’t for the experiences and skills I have gained as a volunteer.
“Following news of this award, I have received so many kind and generous comments from friends and colleagues at CTM which I have been truly humbled by. It means a huge deal to me.”
Congratulations Dale, we are all proud of you here at CTM! #AtOurBest
