Corporate Nursing Team awarded High Sheriff Award

Three members of our Corporate Nursing Team; Becky Gammon, Tanya Tye and Ben Durham were presented the High Sheriff Award yesterday morning (July 18) by the High Sheriff, Maria Thomas.

The award recognised their fantastic work over the past two years; stepping away from normal duties to clinically lead and support two of the biggest programmes of work ever to be undertaken by CTM UHB – the setting up of the Health Board’s Field Hospital, Ysbyty’r Seren and 5 Community Vaccine Centres with outreach teams supporting care homes and housebound.

Ysbyty’r Seren

In April 2020, Ben and Tanya were part of the team in setting up Ysbyty’r Seren during Covid. Initially, this was based at Hensol but later moved to Pencoed to officially become Ysbyty’r Seren, and opening in October 2020.

Both team members were invaluable in:

  • Providing professional and clinical nursing expertise in relation to the ordering of clinical equipment required to deliver patient care and to support the clinical environment; and
  • Managing all the necessary nursing documentation and planning processes for providing care for patients in a completely new environment.

Becky’s role was to support the wider recruitment and deployment of staff into Ysbyty’r Seren; ensuring that Ysbyty’r Seren had the staff it needed to support the opening of CTM’s first field hospital.

Ben took on the role as Senior Nurse for Ysbyty’r Seren when it opened, until it transferred over to Bridgend Primary Care Senior Teams.

COVID-19 Vaccination programme

After a busy time of ensuring that Ysbyty’r Seren was built, fully equipped and up and running to care for patients, the team’s expertise and skills were later transferred to support CTM’s COVID-19 Vaccination programme.

Becky took on the role of Clinical Lead for CVC’s, with Ben and Tanya each taking a lead role as community vaccinators across the CVCs.

Sharon O’Brien, Becky, Tanya and Ben’s Manager said:

"My team have totally embraced everything they have been asked to do; working above and beyond to support the Health Board and the population of CTM during the COVID pandemic. They have worked tirelessly to ensure that staff were supported clinically, but most importantly that our patients were being cared for appropriately and safely, in a totally different environment.

“I am incredibly proud of them and I am so happy see them recognised today for their hard work, dedication and professionalism during some of the most difficult times to ever face our Health Board.

“Their support and dedication was pivotal in helping build CTM’s Field Hospital and the role out of our CVC’s and vaccination programme.

“Congratulations all – you have been amazing!”
