Ceri is a Cavell Star!
Retired Sister, Ceri Thomas, who worked in the intensive care unit at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital is the winner of a Cavell Star Award.
An inspiring national awards programme, Cavell Star Awards are given to nurses, midwives, nursing associates and healthcare assistants who shine bright and show exceptional care to one of three groups of people: Their colleagues; their patients or to patients’ families.
Ceri won the award for going above and beyond for patients and colleagues.
Her nomination highlighted outstanding leadership and compassion; always having time to listen to staff and for developing staff to realise their potential; always going the extra mile for her patients and that patient safety was always a priority.
Greg Dix, director of nursing, midwifery and patient care who attended the presentation, said: “To be awarded a Cavell Star Award is such a high accolade in the field of nursing. We, as a health board, are very proud of Ceri’s achievements and delighted that her support, encouragement, care and compassion has been rewarded.”
Friends and colleagues agree that her personality and smile lit up any room, no matter how busy the shift was.
Ceri, said: “I am just so shocked and happy to have won this award. I didn’t even know I was nominated but I am thrilled.
“Thank you to all my colleagues.”
Consultant anaesthetist, Dr Pete Fitzgerald, presented the award to a surprised Ceri in front of friends and colleagues.
Ceri is the recipient of a dazzling Cavell Star medal and also a beautiful Cavell Star pin badge which she will wear with pride.
Deborah Matthews, head of nursing at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, said: “I have had the privilege to work alongside Ceri at the beginning of her career in Intensive Care as a senior staff nurse in East Glamorgan Hospital.
“Ceri was inspirational and an excellent role model and mentor who put patients, their families and her work colleagues at the forefront of everything she did.
“I have seen Ceri develop professionally and to become a unit manager who has led a brilliant team up until her recent retirement.
“The award is a fantastic achievement to be proud of and I wish Ceri every happiness in her future endeavours.”
