FEED CYCLE PROJECT CASE STUDY |
|
BACKGROUND
The Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) has enabled this partnership, after launching an award-winning pilot to repurpose the Health Board's cardboard waste into animal bedding, in collaboration with a social enterprise and South Wales Police, this enabled CTMUHB to rethink resource management, consider long-term impacts, and find practical solutions aligned with the Well-being of Future Generations Act. The partnership with Pulse Plastics allows CTMUHB to collect and repurpose specific valuable single use plastics – HDPE and PP.
The project has increased local employment opportunities at ELITE, supporting social responsibility goals. It addresses the healthcare sector's carbon footprint and motivates sustainable practices. The partnership is measured using the Sustainable Value Equation, considering outcomes, environmental, social, and financial impacts. The collaborative approach has created a passionate community focused on repurposing waste and local employment. Endorsed by waste consortiums, government, and healthcare leaders, CTMUHB is pioneering climate emergency solutions. Positive feedback from staff, schools, and local authorities indicates potential for scaling the work across Wales.
THE RIC HUB ARE SUPPORTING COORDINATION:
Confirm the range of single-use plastic items from CTMUHB that can be repurposed, including clinical waste plastics. Locate where these plastic items are available within the different hospital departments across CTMUHB sites. Ensure all contamination matters related to the plastic waste streams have been properly addressed to categorise them as "clean" and suitable for repurposing.
