Birth Reflection Service

woman in deep thought

After your birth...We would like to offer our congratulations on the birth of your baby, and we hope that your experience with us has been an extremely positive one.  The birth of a baby is an experience which is unique to every person and family. No two births are the same and as such we hope that you have felt supported and listened to during your time in our care. Whether your birth was straightforward or more complicated, your midwives and obstetricians should have offered a discussion for you to receive information about your birth and the opportunity to ask questions and seek explanations. We encourage you to discuss your experience with your midwife or another member of the maternity team before you go home, and additionally your community midwife should also offer to do this during the first few days at home.

We hope that we can provide you with any support, reassurance and explanations that you may need. We understand that for some women, for many different reasons, their pregnancy, labour or birth could have been a difficult or challenging time. On occasions, we appreciate that it can take some time to process your thoughts and experience.

If you continue to have outstanding questions after the first 6-8 weeks following the birth of your baby and wish to organise an appointment with a member of our team to discuss your experience further, you are welcome to request this by providing your name and contact details via the following email address: CTM.Afterthoughts@wales.nhs.uk (If you are unable to access email, your community midwife or Health Visitor will also be able to support you by sending a referral on your behalf). You will be contacted in the first instance by phone to identify the most appropriate person to help you explore your questions and give explanations. You will then be offered an appointment (this may be telephone or virtual appointment), where we will offer to go through your notes with you and discuss your experience; to provide explanations and information about the care you received. We hope you will be able to reflect on your experience and ask any questions you have.
