Slips, trips and falls

In colder weather we are all more at risk of slipping and falling over. There is less daylight, fallen leaves become wet and slippery and cold weather can cause ice and snow.

In Wales between 230,000 and 460,000 people over the age of 60 fall, but over 50% of falls are preventable.

There are some key things you can do to help prevent slips, trips and falls this winter. These include:

  • Wearing flat shoes with rubber soles or shoes with heavy treads for traction

  • Avoid distractions when out and about

  • Use support such as handrails and walking aids

  • Moving rugs and mats out of the way

  • Ensuring pathways are effectively lit

  • Having a light near your bed if you wake up in the night

  • Remove any trip hazards like wires and clutter from your home
