The Medical Education Department recently wrapped up its eighth annual ‘Teaching Skills for Doctors’ course at the Princess of Wales Hospital.
The two-day programme is designed to equip doctors across the health board with crucial teaching skills that are expected in their roles but often not formally taught. Through a blend of practical workshops and interactive sessions, participants learn essential teaching techniques tailored to clinical environments, as well as details of the Cardiff Medical School curriculum, robust structures to deliver feedback and innovative technologies to make their teaching more engaging.
Starting in 2017, the course has evolved over its eight-year run and is now run by the Deputy Assistant Medical Director for Education, Dr Dewi Rogers. The course has the added benefit of being accredited by the Academy of Medical Educators, meaning on completion participants can apply for membership of the Academy, as well as providing crucial points in specialty applications for participants. Dr Rogers commented: “It’s been great to see the course go from strength to strength over the last 8 years. I started as a participant on the course and was subsequently invited back as faculty, before taking over the role of course director in 2023. It’s been so rewarding to see doctors from all across CTM become involved in teaching and become more confident as educators.”
This year’s course received glowing feedback with participants unanimously giving it an ‘excellent’ rating, praising its usefulness and relevance to their professional development.
The course has also attracted attention beyond CTM UHB, leading to plans for another run in November. This upcoming version will be sponsored by Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW), extending the opportunity to doctors across Wales to gain this valuable teaching experience.
