The Sensory Garden at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon has recently undergone a revamp. Having long been used as a place to display memorial plaques, the team at the hospital sourced donations to help breathe new life into the area.
After sanding and painting benches in the garden, staff also planted flowers and plants in raised beds, pots and hanging baskets, including lavender and mint to provide different smells. They have also added ornaments and decorations including windmills, LED sunflower lights, fairy lights, ornamental butterflies, wind chimes and ornamental plaques.
Kelly Bright, Senior Nurse, said: “Patients attending for clinic now have a beautiful sensory garden to help with well-being and anxiety during appointments.”
Kristy Jones (title) said: “Visiting hospital and attending appointments can be anxiety provoking and stressful for many people. Initially the sensory garden was intended for people attending the older persons’ mental health department. However, we decided that the garden should be a public space, and is accessible to staff, patients, carers and any members of the general public accessing the hospital.
“We’d like to thank everyone who worked on and supported the sensory garden project, especially Karen Thomas, Gail Jones, Beverly Davis and Jade Benjamin. So many people donated items, time and expertise to help us to upgrade the garden, and my mother kindly helped us, as nobody in the team knew anything about gardening! The plants, lights and ornaments all combine to provide a fantastic sensory space that our patients and visitors can use for rest and relaxation, and to have a quiet calm place to come to when they’re visiting the hospital.
If you would like to visit the Sensory Garden at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon, it is located on the ambulance corridor opposite Ward 7.
