£42m funding secured for final phase of Prince Charles Hospital redevelopment

Prince Charles Hospital

Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board has secured £42 million of funding from Welsh Government to deliver the third and final phase of the major refurbishment programme at Prince Charles Hospital (PCH), Merthyr Tydfil.

This latest investment, secured in February 2026, marks a significant milestone in a multi‑year transformation of the hospital, one that will ultimately see the hospital effectively rebuilt from the inside out to provide modern, safe and future‑proofed facilities for patients, visitors and staff.

The Phase 3 works will overhaul and modernise a wide range of essential clinical and support services that are critical to the smooth running of a major acute hospital. These include:

  • A new Sterile Services Department to support theatres and endoscopy with state‑of‑the‑art processing facilities.

  • A fully redesigned Receipt and Distribution Hub, including bed and mattress processing, and improved waste management.

  • Enhanced resilience for clinical services, with additional main oxygen tanks and a modern, future‑proofed data centre to strengthen ICT capability.

  • A newly created inpatient therapies area, designed to be accessible, discreet and supportive of early reablement.

  • A modernised Medical Records unit, streamlining how records are processed and stored.

  • A centralised Equipment Library, reducing ward‑level stock, improving maintenance, and enabling better management of essential devices such as syringe drivers and pumps.

  • Final improvements to car parking capacity across the site.

With this final phase now approved, the Health Board will be able to complete all major statutory fire‑stopping improvements across the ground and first floors, complementing earlier ward‑level upgrades already delivered in previous phases.

Together, these works represent one of the most significant hospital modernisation programmes in Wales in recent years.

Sally May, Executive Director of Finance at Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB said:

“This investment is the final piece in an ambitious and much‑needed redevelopment of Prince Charles Hospital. Over the past few years, we have worked systematically to modernise clinical areas, improve safety standards and redesign services around the needs of our patients and staff.

“Securing this final phase means we can complete that journey, strengthening the infrastructure that underpins the entire hospital and ensuring PCH remains a major acute site fit for the future.”
