Volunteer roles – Associate Hospital Managers

Associate Hospital Managers within Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board

We are seeking suitable volunteers to undertake the role of Associate Hospital Managers under the Mental Health Act within the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board.

The post of a Hospital Manager is a statutory role as defined in the Mental Health Act 1983 (the Act) and provides a safeguard for those patients who are detained under the Act or subject to community treatment orders.

Associate Hospital Managers are people who have a wide variety of experience and knowledge from different careers and cannot be employees of the Health Board and are appointed on a voluntary basis. They are paid a set fee for undertaking this work, which is a payment of £50 to act as Chair and £45 as a panel member per hearing. Hearings can take the form of face-to-face, which allows for travelling expenses to be claimed and via digital media.

An Associate Hospital Manager is a role delegated by officers employed by the University Health Board in order to carry out reviews of detention or community treatments orders for those patients under the Act. Participating as a panel member of three you will consider and scrutinise whether the legal justification is met and/or whether to exercise the power of discharge.

This is an important and challenging role and hospital managers should have strong communication skills who can encourage patients to express their own feelings about their detention or community treatment order. You must possess good listening skills and have the ability to assimilate information quickly and recognise and respect issues around confidentiality and data protection.

We are looking for individuals who work well with others, have an understanding of equality and diversity and have experience in dealing with people with mental health problems sensitively in an objective and non-judgemental manner. You must have the ability to demonstrate some knowledge and awareness of legislation associated with the Mental Health Act 1983, and be willing to make yourself available for training sessions which will take place from time to time for legal updates.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

If appointed to this voluntary role the following checks will need completing: A standard DBS check; Occupational Health Check;

When all checks are complete an honorary contract will be issued, which is a written agreement issued to authorised individuals, who are not employees of Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (CTMUHB).
