Launched in April 2023, the PIPYN programme began life as a Merthyr Tydfil-based pilot programme, helping to promote healthy lifestyles and to support children and families to live healthier and more active lives.
Now running in Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda and Taff Ely, the PIPYN team works with children aged between 3-7 years old helping their families to access free support and information covering healthy eating, fussy eating, involving children in meal times, tips for managing screen time, sleep routines, cooking on a budget, cookery skills and much more.
Over the course of the last year, the PIPYN programme has been a huge success, working with over 250 families and delivering over 400 sessions.
The service users have found PIPYN to be incredibly helpful.
One parent said “These sessions have been amazing for how [my daughter] thinks about food…what goes into a meal. I couldn’t give that same experience.”
Another parent said: “We’ve been coming to PIPYN every week…and we’ve loved every minute of it. [My daughter] loves to cook and try new foods, which has been a massive help for me.”
Lisa Sheehan, Dietetic Assistant Practitioner, said “We are delighted that PIPYN has been so successful. PIPYN collaborates with local partners to offer our families tailored, free support. The sessions and access to resources give them the tools to make positive changes. We get lots of feedback on how the children enjoy it but also how the parents/carers really value spending this time as a family, learning and having fun together.
It is clear from the feedback and testimonials from parents and service users that the free support, information and sessions we are providing are having a very real and positive impact on the communities in Merthyr, Rhondda and Taff Ely.”
