The National Association of Medical Device Educators and Trainers (NAMDET), a multidisciplinary, UK-wide project team including Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board’s Robert Matthews (Medical Devices Training Manager) recently won an Advancing Healthcare Award.
The Advancing Healthcare Awards recognise and celebrate the work of allied health professionals, healthcare scientists and those who work alongside them in support roles, leading innovative healthcare practice across the UK.
The NAMDET team won the Best Collaboration Across Clinical, Academia and Industry Award, by developing an eLearning course for medical gas safety. They reviewed current training course content relating to the safe use, storage and setup of medical gas cylinders used in healthcare.
The team initially identified that there was a significant knowledge gap, continued reports of injury and harm, and a lack of national free-to-access training resources relating to medical gas safety.
They then created and developed a new set of learning outcomes to match National Occupational Standards, manufacturer safety information, local policies, and UK industry guidelines.
Robert Matthews said “Our work has helped to address the continuing risk, errors, and incidents around medical gas training and oxygen safety. It provides a much-needed free-to-access training course content and materials. Colleagues from across the UK with backgrounds in clinical, technical, scientific and education helped to develop this universal course for multi-professional use.
“I am delighted that our team has been recognised with this award for the culmination of over 12 months of hard work, not only researching and building the content, but also ensuring the content was scrutinised to ensure accuracy and copy write law was not breached. I was honoured to be asked to join such a prestigious team and to win first prize was the cherry on the cake”.
“This course is now on ESR Wales, all staff that are involved with the administration of oxygen will be encouraged to complete this module. The course can be accessed on ESR Wales NHS ESR Login
using the following code: “000 the safe use, storage and set up of medical gases and cylinders.”
