We are delighted that the first lung screening scans have been provided to patients taking part in the lung health check pilot. The pilot will see patients offered their screening scans in three week blocks - the first week of scanning ended last week, with the second cohort taking place for a week in October (21st-25th), and the third cohort for a week in November. From the first cohort, over 89% of the patients that were invited for a lung scan at the mobile scanning unit attended. The mobile scanner was located on the Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda site, for ease to the patients who visited.
One of the patients who visited the scanner said: “I am thrilled to have been invited for a lung health check, my husband and I are both here today for a scan as we met the criteria of the pilot. I used to smoke but gave up over 25 years ago and my husband gave up smoking over 34 years ago but to have a check on your lungs to identify any potential lung problems before you have any signs or symptoms is fantastic.
“The procedure was simple and quick and the staff were very friendly and efficient. I would say to anyone who has an invite to take up the offer of a scan and catch any potential problems sooner rather than later.”
Dr Sinan Eccles, Consultant in Respiratory Medicine, leading the pilot on behalf of the health board said: “Catching lung cancer early, before there are any signs or symptoms, can make a huge difference to treatment. The first week of scanning went really well with most patients attending their appointments and gaining information which can support them. We also referred 24 patients to our ‘Help Me Quit’ smoking cessation service which is a great move forward for their health.”
