International Week of Deaf People

International Week of Deaf People

Sign languages unite us! 23rd September 2024 - International Day of Sign Languages International Week of Deaf People takes place from 23rd-29th September 2024.

Starting on September 23rd, we join the world in observing the International Day of Sign Languages. This annual event raises awareness about sign languages and advocates for the rights of deaf people globally. This year, the focus is on encouraging countries and organisations to commit to Sign Language Rights.

At CTMUHB, we are dedicated to supporting our deaf patients in accessing services and communicating their needs effectively. To ensure these needs are met, we offer a variety of tools and services:

Free BSL Translation Services
We provide both video and in-person British Sign Language (BSL) translation services, available Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. These services can be booked in advance for scheduled appointments or meetings. If you require a BSL translator, please inform the department, and they will arrange this for you.

Speech-to-Text Devices
Our major sites are equipped with devices that convert speech to text, making communication easier.

Hearing Loops and Listening Devices
We offer hearing loops and other listening devices to assist patients who are deaf or hard of hearing. Information about these devices should be available in all departments. If you don’t see it, please ask a member of staff for assistance.
